FSA/HSA Frequently Asked Questions
Your FSA/HSA administrator is your best source of information, but you’ll find answers to some frequently asked questions here.
What’s an FSA?
An FSA is a savings account that you use to pay for eligible healthcare products and expenses during the year. Sponsored by your employer, this account lets you set aside pre-tax dollars from your regular earnings for use on qualified medical and dental services and products for you and your family. The money in this account usually must be spent by the end of the year, although plans differ and small rollovers of unused funds may be allowed; check details of your individual plan. The IRS limit on 2021 contributions is $2,750 per person.
What’s an HSA?
An HSA is a savings account containing funds you’ve set aside to pay for eligible healthcare products and expenses. This special savings account is only for those who are covered under high-deductible health plans (HDHPs). Pre-tax dollars in this account earn interest tax-free, and money accumulated is not taxed when it’s taken out to pay for qualified medical expenses. Because the HSA is owned by you, any money left in the account at the end of the year rolls over to the next year. The 2021 annual maximum contribution is $3,600 per individual / $7,200 per family regardless of the HDHP deductible. If you’re 55 or older at the end of the year, you may put in an extra $1,000. Make sure to check all IRS eligibility rules to see if you qualify for an HSA.
I have health insurance. Is that the same as an FSA or HSA?
No. FSAs and HSAs are pre-tax spending accounts. They allow you to set aside pre-tax dollars for eligible medical expenses. Contact your employer to find out if one or both of these plans are available to you.
How can I find FSA- and HSA-eligible items on your site?
Every item that’s eligible is marked with the badge below:

In addition, you can modify your site search to only show eligible items.
Please note that while we use IRS guidelines, individual plans have the final say over what products and services are eligible, so the icon displayed on our site does not guarantee you will be reimbursed. Always check with your administrator for specific guidelines.
What items are FSA/HSA eligible?
FSA/HSA dollars can be used for healthcare expenses that aren’t covered by your health insurance. Items marked with the blue badge as 'new' were introduced as eligible items for reimbursement in 2020.
