I got this because of the supposed 20 second time to take a reading. 20 seconds after insertion there was indeed a reading, indicating normal temperature; but there was no beep. Since I felt very feverish, I took another reading using my old mercury thermometer. 100.1 degrees. So I tried this product again, to see what went wrong. Over the course of 10 minutes, it showed a steadily rising temperature until it too reached 100.1 (I have great field of vision and could read the display while keeping the sensor properly inserted). Then it shut off (apparently the 10-minute battery saver did this). It never did beep. So I'm defying the risk of hazardous material and sticking with the mercury thermometer, which I can trust and only takes 4 minutes.

no beep. thermometer would light up after 30 seconds but no matter how long I kept it under my tongue I never got an accurate reading.
