Hand Sanitizer from Medline atHome

Hand sanitizer, for use when proper handwashing with soap and water isn’t possible, has never been more in demand than during the coronavirus pandemic. Now you can shop our large assortment of hand sanitizer gels, foams and wipes originally made for use in hospitals and healthcare settings of all kinds.

Read on to learn answers to some of the most common questions about hand sanitizer.

Should I use hand sanitizer instead of soap?
No. According to the CDC, you should only use hand sanitizer when you don’t have access to soap and water. While hand sanitizer can effectively kill some germs, it doesn’t kill all germs. In addition, hand sanitizer can’t remove harmful chemicals, such as pesticides and heavy metals like lead.

Because you never know if you’ll have access to soap and water, it’s a good idea to carry a travel-size bottle of hand sanitizer with you in the car, your travel bag or purse.

Does hand sanitizer kill COVID-19?
Scientists know that hand sanitizer kills viruses similar to the coronavirus so they believe it will work against the coronavirus as well. The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine says you should use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Read the ingredient list and look for at least 60% ethanol (ethyl alcohol) or 70% isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol commonly called rubbing alcohol).

What’s the right way to use liquid hand sanitizer?
The CDC says you should use enough sanitizer to cover your hands. Rub your hands together until they feel dry (around 20 seconds). Do NOT rinse or wipe off sanitizer before it’s dry.

What about hand sanitizer wipes?
Hand sanitizer wipes are not the same thing as household wipes. You should never use household bleach wipes to clean your hands. Hand sanitizer wipes are designed specifically for use on your hands. Just like with liquid hand sanitizer, you should read the label and look for at least 60% ethanol (ethyl alcohol) or 70% isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol).

What should I look for in a hand sanitizer?
The CDC says hand sanitizers should be at least 60% ethyl alcohol. Other approved ingredients may include sterile distilled water, hydrogen peroxide and glycerin, according to the CDC.

The FDA says you should not make your own hand sanitizer.

When should I NOT use hand sanitizer?
According to the CDC, you should not use hand sanitizer if your hands are dirty or greasy, after gardening, playing outdoors, fishing or camping. Find a handwashing station or bathroom instead.
