What is an ostomy?
An ostomy is a surgical procedure that’s used to treat serious bowel problems or let the body heal after gastrointestinal surgery or organ injury. It can be temporary or permanent. During ostomy surgery, an opening called a stoma is created using either the small intestine or large intestine. An ostomy bag is attached to the stoma outside the body and it collects waste products like stool.

What ostomy supplies do I need?
Your quality of life is directly impacted by how well you take care of your stoma so it’s important that you follow all doctor-recommended care routines and use the proper supplies. As your needs change, you may want to experiment with different brands until you find what’s right for you.

Essential ostomy supplies include:

1) Pouching system – one or two-piece bags
Medline bestseller: New Image 2-Piece Drainable Transparent Pouch HTP18103

2) Skin barrier – Cut-to-fit styles are best when your stoma is still changing size. Pre-sized styles may work better once you’ve had your stoma for a while.

3) Stoma powder
Medline bestseller: Brava Ostomy Powder COI1907H

4) Skin protectant wipes or wands

5) Adhesive remover

7) Odor eliminator
Medline bestseller: m9 Odor Cleaner/Decrystallizer

What is an ostomy bag?
An ostomy bag, also called a pouch, attaches to the stoma on the outside of the body. Stool flows into the bag where it is collected. The bag needs to be emptied multiple times during the day.

What’s a urologist?
A urologist is a doctor who specializes in treating problems of the genitourinary tract (kidneys, urinary bladder, adrenal glands, urethra and male reproductive organs).

What problems do urologists treat?
If you’re having trouble fully emptying your bladder or you have a history of painful UTIs, a urologist can help. They also treat: bladder problems; kidney stones and blockages; and bladder and kidney cancer. In addition, they can help men with prostate disorders including enlarged prostate (BPH), erectile dysfunction and reproductive issues.

What is a Foley catheter?
A Foley catheter, also called an indwelling catheter, is a special medical device designed to treat urine problems. The thin, sterile tube is inserted into the bladder and then connected to a drainage bag.

What is an external male catheter?
An external catheter, also called a condom catheter, is a urinary incontinence sheath that slips over the penis and connects to a drainage bag. Many people find it painless and more comfortable than an indwelling catheter.
