The secret of swaddling: How-to make baby feel safe and secure.

Learn how to swaddle with any baby blanket in 5 simple steps.

Swaddling your baby in a baby blanket provides more than just warmth, it’s a snug hold that gives babies a feeling of safety and security that mimics the wombAnd, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, when swaddling is done correctly, it can help calm infants and promote sleep.

Step 1
Lay baby blanket on a flat surface in a diamond shape. Fold down the top point to create a diamond shape. Lay baby faceup, with baby’s shoulders slightly above the edge.

Step 2
Pick up left point of blanket and bring it across baby’s body. Tuck it in between baby’s arm and side.

Step 3
Fold the bottom of the blanket up over baby’s feet.

Step 4
Gently hold baby in place and pick up right point of blanket. Wrap it across baby’s body and tuck under baby’s back. Make sure not to swaddle too tightly, baby’s legs need to be able to move.

Step 5
Lay baby gently down to sleep, making sure to monitor her so she doesn't roll over while swaddled.

Important: Swaddling isn’t forever. Stop swaddling when baby is 2 months old, before they learn to roll over on their stomach.
