Incontinence can be confusing so below you’ll find answers to some commonly asked questions. If you need help finding the right product, you can always call our friendly customer service representatives at 1-855-441-8737.

What is incontinence?
Incontinence is the involuntary loss of control over the bladder or bowels.

What causes incontinence?
There are many factors that can contribute to incontinence so you should always see a doctor if you’re experiencing symptoms. Age, ageing, physical changes in the bladder or sphincter muscles, diabetes and neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and stroke can lead to incontinence. Certain medications can also cause incontinence. Women may experience incontinence during or after pregnancy or menopause. For men, prostate issues can contribute to incontinence.

What are the types of incontinence?
There are 2 types of incontinence: urinary and fecal. The degree of loss of control can range from minor (slight urine leakage when sneezing) to complete (no control at all).

Urinary incontinence is urine leakage caused by the loss of voluntary bladder control. There are 4 subtypes: stress incontinence, overflow incontinence, overactive bladder and functional incontinence.

Fecal incontinence is stool leakage caused by the loss of voluntary bowel control. There are 2 subtypes: urge and passive.

What are the best wearable products for incontinence?
It depends on your needs. Bladder pads are good for light or occasional urinary incontinence. Pull-up disposable underwear comes in different absorbency levels and is good for medium to heavy urinary/fecal incontinence. Disposable underwear with tabs (also called adult diapers) are good for heavy or complete urinary/fecal incontinence and they’re easier for caregivers to change.

What items do I need to keep my loved one with incontinence comfortable and dry?
One of the main problems with incontinence is MASD (Moisture Associated Skin Damage). Keeping your loved one clean and dry and protecting fragile, at-risk skin is most important. Depending on your loved one’s level of incontinence you will need wearable protective garments: bladder pads, pull-up disposable underwear or disposable adult diapers. Drypads or underpads can be placed on wheelchair seats, beds and furniture to absorb unexpected leaks and help keep moisture away from skin. Skin protectant wipes with dimethicone can clean, moisturize and protect all at once. A topical ointment will provide a barrier that helps protect fragile skin. Finally, odor eliminators can increase dignity by helping to keep the air smelling clean and fresh.

Do I need to buy gender-specific incontinence pads for women or men?
Many incontinence products have a unisex design so they can be worn by both men and women. There are also products tailored just for women and just for men. It’s really just a matter of personal preference.

Can you use incontinence underwear postpartum?
New moms are smart and resourceful and one of their not-so-best-kept secrets is the use of disposable underwear after baby. Many moms like the extra absorbency and peace-of-mind protection pull-on disposable underwear offers as well as the slim, body-conscious designs available.
